Sparring partner becomes business

As a small business owner, it's easy to forget to set aside time for marketing. Having been self-employed for many years, I know how easy it is to focus on the day-to-day running of the business. Client meetings, production and tight deadlines come first. It can also be hard to brainstorm with yourself and work creatively on your own strategy.

The value of friends

I have therefore gathered around me a group of people with different skills. A network that has become my sounding board, offering their opinions on my challenges, ambitions and goals. These people are gold both for my company and for me personally. I believe that few people, if any, can shoulder all the roles required in a small business. What does it look like for you?

Another thing I discovered, when I finally set aside time to strategise my own business, was a sense of pride in what I had achieved. It was wonderful to hear others put into words what I am good at.

For example, I haven't dared to take a seat in public because I don't have a university education. This has been a barrier for me in sharing my experience and knowledge with a larger group. My network brushed away my jealousy and helped me to have the confidence in my skills. My long experience far outweighs the lack of higher education.

Useful with some no

Having said that, it is equally important to realise what you are not good at. To stop saying yes to things you can't do. I, like many others, am a yes man to nature. In the past, I've said yes to things I'm not very good at in order to make my clients happy. This has led to sleepless nights and sprained integrity. When I learned to say no, it was a wonderful feeling. And it wasn't as hard as I thought. A few well-chosen no's give me more time to do a better job on the assignments I'm mastering and passionate about.

If you're a small business owner like me, and recognize some of the challenges I've faced, I really want to offer a tip. Set aside time to create a marketing strategy for your own company. I'd be happy to be your sounding board - that person who challenges your thinking, questions what you take for granted and brings new perspectives.

My friends are your friends

I offer my long experience, broad knowledge and strong network. For you as a client, this means affordable solutions with high delivery and without unnecessary overhead costs. And you can rely on me to say no if there's something I can't do. In that case, I'd rather recommend one of my knowledgeable partners. Together, it's magic!
